Israel, Bolivia Resume Diplomatic Ties
The formal reestablishment of ties took place on Tuesday in Washington, where Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar and his Bolivian counterpart, Fernando Aramayo, signed a joint declaration.
Saar indicated that ambassadors will be designated in the near term to represent both nations.
In a related development, Bolivia recently lifted visa requirements for citizens of the United States and Israel.
These diplomatic advancements follow the inauguration of Bolivia’s center-right president, Rodrigo Paz, in November, marking the end of almost twenty years of leftist governance in the country.
Bolivia originally severed relations with Tel Aviv in 2009, protesting Israel’s military operations in Gaza during 2008-2009. Although relations were briefly reinstated in 2019, they were suspended again in 2023 in response to Israeli actions deemed war crimes in the Gaza Strip.
Other Latin American nations, such as Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Belize, and Nicaragua, have also cut diplomatic, economic, or military ties with Israel in opposition to its destructive war in Gaza.
Since October 2023, the Israeli military has reportedly killed over 70,000 people in Gaza, the majority of whom were women and children, and injured more than 171,000, leaving much of the region devastated.
